Pop Ballads
What? Slow songs, lyrics tell a story (often about love)
When? Errr.....1970s, 1980s and 1990s?!
Who? Mostly singer-songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Sting, Kate Bush, Elton John, Adele.
In the 1980s there was a lot of power ballads.
In the 1990s ballads were very popular with boy bands (Take That, Westlife) and girl bands (Spice Girls, All Saints)
Structure? Early ballads used to be very long with lots of verses. Modern ballads tend to be in Verse-Chorus structure, however some might be "through-composed"
Instruments? Piano, Guitar, Keyboards, Drums, Strings.
Other information? Vocal singers might use acapella (singing with no backing), vibrato (when the voice vibrates up and down), falsetto (when men use their high registers like The Bee Gees), portamento (sliding from one note to the other) and riffing (decorations and added notes to the melody)
